Modder interview : DrGamut of the Goblin war party mod

1: What's your real name, or do you prefer to be known under your alias DrGamut ?
-Jonathan D. Hicks

2. How old are you ?
-18, born 12/05/87

3. Have you released a mod before, what was your first work ?
-The Goblin War Party mod was my first mod for Oblivion, but definitely not my last. I have modified many games before, such as titles from the Command & Conquer series (Tiberian Sun, Red Alert 2, Generals.) But this was my first experience with a game of this genre. I was very drawn to it by the easy to use Construction Set.

4. We have really enjoyed your Goblin War Party mod, can you tell us something about that ?
-The Goblin War Party mod was a learning experience for me, but a friend of mine (RehcamretsneF) suggested I should release it so others might enjoy it.

4b: How many people worked on it ?

-I was the only person who worked directly on the mod but I have a couple friends who I corresponded with during its creation for advice. I also must thank the people at GameFAQs, particularly archonex, for ironically
inspiring this effort with a bogus thread making false claims about the abilities of the game itself. vb3, also a member of GameFAQs, was the first to make some important discoveries regarding the relevant scripts in the
game.

4c: How long did it take you to complete the first release ?

-I completed the first release less than an hour after I knew what I intended to do. I spent about half of a day investigating and studying the related scripts and the goblins themselves before this. It took another couple hours
to identify the significant issues and address them.

4d: Will you be adding more stuff to it in the future ?

-I am currently satisfied with the mod as is, but that is just me. I would be happy to consider all suggestions or complaints and address them in future releases. Also, as I am still learning about the inner workings of the
goblins and their scripts as I put effort into developing my next mod, I may be inclined to take what I have learned back to improve the Goblin War Party mod.

5: Are you planning on any other mods for Oblivion ?
-Definitely, my modding journey with Oblivion has just begun. My next mod, and current aspiration, is the Goblin Wars mod. It is similar to the Goblin War Party mod but much wider in scope. It is currently in BETA and I can
recommend it only for testing (which is very appreciated!) rather than casual use. Watch for my name. :)

6: What do you think is the coolest / best mod or TC made for Morrowind ?
-Shamefully I have never played Morrowind or any other titles released by Bethesda.

7: What do you think is the coolest / best mod made for Oblivion so far ?
-As of yet, the most useful mod to me has been BTMod. It is the only mod I use while developing and testing my own mods. Well...that and the nude patch. :)

8: What mods are you hoping to see in the near future for Oblivion ?
-I would like to see comprehensive documentation on Oblivion's AI, detailing the distinctions between how it functions dependent on the location and state of the player. This more than anything would aid my
modding attempts significantly. For the players, there are definitely some significant issues with the game itself that most can agree need to be addressed by Bethesda themselves. Perhaps some of the performance tweaks
that currently require the player to modify the INI themselves could be made ingame options or defaults in the future.

9: What can you tell beginning modders to help them get started ? (Some tips from a pro)
-Beginning modders, I refer you to http://cs.elderscrolls.com ! If the Construction Set itself were not amazing enough, the details included for us in the CS wiki are the icing on the cake. Truly a foundation for a
prosperous community.

10: Is there anything you'd like to add, or ask us some questions maybe ?
-I'm stunned there was such interest in this mod, as I said above it really was more a learning experience for me than anything. But I am very glad that it could be of use to the community. I will make sure to check out
the rest of your site.
