Interview : Tarym, Creator of the Werewolf mod

I met Tarym on the official Elderscrolls Forums, where I saw his thread about a work in progress, a werewolf mod for Oblivion (‘The Belgian werewolf’). Tarym is a modeler with an artistic background, we asked him a couple of questions about himself , the werewolf mod and Oblivion modding in general.

ESO: First of all, I’d like to know your name. Or would you rather be known by a nickname ?

Tarym: I am known as Guillaume Deruwez, or Tarym Lass Wathui (Tarym Shadow Leaf in Sindaryn, the elven tongue of Tolkien) aka Berior na peth i danc (Translation of Guillaume in Sindaryn)

ESO: Ok, we shall call you Tarym if that’s ok with you. And how old are you ?

Tarym: 20 years old

ESO: Where do you live at this moment ?

Tarym: I live in a Soignies, Belgium (known for its blue stone, a kind of marble)

ESO: What kind of school are you going to, or do you have a job ?

Tarym: Well I’m going to a design school (drawing section), I guess you could say it runs in the family, my father is an artist (drawing), a member of my mother’s family is a really well known artist (drawing) here in Belgium and in France (Will, who draw the ‘Tif et Tondu’ comics) and several other member are artists of many sorts.

ESO: How much time do you spend behind your PC on average ?

Tarym: Too much time ^_^ I would say 5 or 6 hours a day

ESO: Which Elder Scrolls games have you played ?

Tarym: Daggerfall, Morrowind and of course Oblivion

ESO: Can you explain what the plan for the mod is until now ? (storyline, rules system)

Tarym: What I can say about the story without spoiling the fun is this:

The player will be asked by a captain of one of the cities (probably Bruma or Leyawin) to expulse a group of gypsies. But something goes horribly wrong and the player finds himself cursed.

At first He will have no control over the transformation but after a quest he will be given a choice: stay a werewolf with more control or being human again. After that the player will be contacted by two group, the hunters (who chase werewolf) and a werewolf clan. If he is human or not the player will have different quests to do with the group he chooses (yes, you can be a werewolf and work for the hunters or a human with the werewolves). I intend to implement ten different endings to the mod (lots of replay value).

The game mechanics will be simple, every 20th night, the player will have to transform and kill at least 2 or 3 people or getting a huge malus when becoming human again (malus that you will not be able to cure at a temple). In human form, the player will have no bonus at all, or maybe a small fatigue boost (but nothing uber). But in werewolf form he will be stronger than anything. After gaining control over the curse, he will only have to kill one person and he will be able to transform into a werewolf once a day during 2 minutes (but at a great cost). The werewolf and the human form will have a weakness to silver and enchanted weapon, nothing dramatic in human form but in werewolf form the weakness will be stronger

ESO: How did you get the idea for this mod ? Was the Morrowind Bloodmoon addon or the Werewolf mod an inspiration at all ?

Tarym: Well the lack of werewolves in Oblivion is really annoying. And since the McAsmod team were giving no sign of life, I decided to add them myself. The werewolf in Bloodmoon were not really an inspiration, but more an example of what I shouldn't be doing in term of design. I really didn't like the design of those buggers (too slim, too small, even a wood-elf was bigger and they ran really weird)

ESO: How long (~hours) have you been working on the Werewolf so far ?

Tarym: Maybe 20 or 25 hours

ESO: Are you getting any help from other people with this mod ?

Tarym: Yeah, Grimdeath will help me with the texture and I hope to find someone for the script

ESO: When do you think you will have the first release ready for the public ?

Tarym: Maybe in a month or two

ESO: What kind of character do you like to play in Oblivion ?

Tarym: In Morrowind I used to play a Dunmer warrior, but with the new sneak and magic system I now play a ranger type character.

ESO: Do you have any mods installed, which ones are your favorites ?

Tarym: Mighty magick is a must have, plus a lot of sneak changing mods.

ESO: Have you ever created mods for any other games ?

Tarym: I did made some skins and models for JK2 / JKA, but that was just for a clan - nothing public. (Although .. I was the French speaking guy that was trying to understand the model making process on forums)

ESO: What about other Oblivion mods .. any releases ? (I've searched but didn't find any)

Tarym: No the Belgian werewolf mod for Oblivion takes all my time and attention at the moment.

ESO: Do you have any plans for future mods ?

Tarym: Who knows, maybe I’ll add the other kinds of were creatures or something completely different like new weapons.
