Mod of the day : Ruins of Nalcarum

Today we thought we'd leave the character cosmetics in Oblivion for what they are, and test a dungeon mod. Let's see if someone can show us a bad-ass end boss. We already mentioned this mod briefly, when we talked about the big site update that has been completed. It's a ruin, in county Kvatch. It's on a nice hill top location, with a very nice view - but we'll get to that later.

First off, the installation was as straight forward as it should be for a mod. Unpack, tick the box and off you go… The ruin is immediately shown on your map, so you can fast travel there. When I did this, I was greeted with a nice view of the ruin which is ‘slightly’ overgrown by foliage. I look around to see if there was an enemy to protect the entrance, but didn’t see anyone there. As I scouted the area, my attention was drawn to the door.

A book lay beside the door, which looked very old, but it can’t have been sitting there for long… I opened it up and read about a crew of men who went inside these ruins to get crystals and other valuables, but met an unfortunate end. I was feeling up for a challenge, so I dropped the book into my bag and opened the door.

After having gotten over the smell (a fine mixture of rotting flesh and rat dung), I heard something in the next room. As I pulled out my sword, a skeleton came running towards me. I failed to get my sword up in time and was hit with a burning pain. The thought that this weapon might be magical made me even more determined to finish this skeleton and quickly explore these ruins. I jumped at him and took him down with a few quick slashes from my silver short blade.

Further on in the dungeon, I had to go down some very dark stairs and I forgot to bring any torches. I took a moment to get the courage together, readied my bow and walked down the stairs. Again I was attacked by those walking bone monsters, I fired off a couple of arrows into the first one and sent the second one back to his grave with my blade. Here I found some nice loot .. enough to keep me interested enough to go further into the ruins.

I walked up the stairs and cast a quick healing spell on myself. Just making sure I’m in tip-top shape before anything funny happens again. And indeed, I had to take down more and more of the damn buggers, they seemed to be crawling in every corner there. I really needed some healing and was running out of magic points. I quickly sneaked into a little corner and took some time to heal myself properly. I knew there would be more skeletons on the way, but in fact I had no idea what was waiting for me.

I ran up some stairs and down the hallway. As I took a moment to catch my breath before I opened the door to the next room, I could smell another one of those skeletons. But wait, this time the smell was much stronger… I opened the door and there I saw, what must have been a resurrected giant troll. The biggest skeleton I had seen in my life came running towards me, swinging an enormous mace.

Needless to say, my skills were stronger than his. After looting the room, I ran outside for some fresh air. There, on top of the hill I took a good look at what I managed to pull out of the ruins. I was happy to see that I got hold of several magical items, and the book from the stairway looked to be quite expensive as well. I got up from the ground and walked towards the edge of the hill and looked at the sunset. This was quite a refreshing little adventure and could very well be the start of something bigger.
